How much are those eggs . . . in the window? Not too much more than in the states, at 15 cents an egg (22 cents American, so about $2.64/dozen). A few things to point out:
- Eggs are not in the refrigerated section. They sit on shelves, or in store windows. Is this bad? I have no idea, but I haven't heard of anyone getting sick from eggs. Swine flu ("grippe A"), on the other hand . . .
- The standard unit for egg purchase is not the dozen. It's whatever you want. I usually get a half-dozen at a time, so my eggs are always pretty fresh.
- Eggs here are bigger than eggs at home, so the price per ounce is probably less.
This picture is of our favorite Chinese-owned primeur (there are several on our street). A few nights ago, I bought two onions, an 8-ounce zucchini squash (courgette), two carrots, and some spinach for 94 euro cents, or around $1.35. Eating veggies is healthy for my body and for my bank account!
You haven't heard of anyone getting sick from eggs? Ever heard of a little disease called, I don't know, SALMONELLA?
ReplyDeleteI think the French are immune to salmonella. You better not eat any eggs when you come visit.
ReplyDeleteWhen eggs are sold in the US, they have been washed first. This rids them of their natural protective coating that protects them from natural temperature changes in nature. So eggs you buy in the US you have to put in le frigo. BUT eggs that come straight from a hen and have NOT been washed still have this coating, so they don't have to be refridgerated. The eggs in Europa still have this coating.
ReplyDeleteWhy do I know this? Because I have chicken sat for two different sets of hens over the last year. I know. It's weird. You know a chicken-whisper-er
Chicken sat? That's awesome. We're hoping to have our own chickens someday... we'll be sure to go to you for advice!
ReplyDeleteAlso - does this mean we need to be washing our eggs before we eat them?
You have to wash the eggs anytime after Louis touches them.
ReplyDeletelarge, medium and extra-large eggs are often the same price in supermarkets.
